The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
