The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
