Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
