Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
A Historic Figure
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Adhering to Socialist Principles

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Subsidized daycare
- Free buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.
The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
